Frequently Asked Questions

Waste-to-energy is the process of converting non-recyclable waste materials into usable forms of energy, such as electricity, heat, or fuel. Instead of letting organic waste decompose in landfills and release harmful methane gas, waste-to-energy facilities capture that energy and put it to productive use. At Nitsuh Renewables, we use a technology called anaerobic digestion. This process uses natural bacteria to break down organic waste in an oxygen-free environment, producing biogas that can be used for cooking or generating electricity. The remaining material becomes a nutrient-rich liquid fertilizer that helps farmers grow healthier crops. This approach reduces landfill waste, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and creates valuable resources from what would otherwise be a problem.

Nitsuh Renewables contributes to the community in three meaningful ways. First, we create jobs. Our pilot facility employs 50+ former waste pickers. We pay fair wages, provide safety equipment, and offer training so workers can build long-term careers instead of surviving day to day. Second, we improve public health and safety. By diverting 200 tons of organic waste from the Koshe landfill daily! We also reduce odors, pests, and methane emissions that affect nearby communities. Third, we support local farmers. Our fertilizer is an affordable, natural alternative to expensive imported chemical fertilizers. We give farmers a way to improve their crop yields while protecting their soil. In the long term, we plan to expand and replicate this model in other Ethiopian cities, creating even more opportunities for communities across the country.

We process wet, organic waste. This includes scraps from households, fruit and vegetable waste from markets, and agricultural residues. We do not process plastic, glass, metals, construction debris, or hazardous waste. Our technology, ‘anaerobic digestion’ is specifically designed for the high-moisture organic material that makes up 65 to 75 percent of what goes into the landfills.

Yes, absolutely! Biogas produced through anaerobic digestion is a clean and safe cooking fuel. Before it is distributed, our biogas goes through a purification process that removes hydrogen sulfide and other impurities. This makes it comparable to natural gas. It burns cleanly with no smoke, which means healthier indoor air quality compared to traditional charcoal or wood stoves. We also provide safety instructions for all our customers so they can use the gas confidently and safely.
